Our 1st Adventure!

We started off today by visiting the hospital Adam will be working at-The Alaskan Native Medical Center. It is pretty close to our condo!! We were given a tour and met a lot of great people. Everyone was super friendly and welcoming. The hospital is.....AWESOME..?!?! (I never thought I would say that--not a fan of hospitals) They planned some great architecture and native art filled the displays. Their gift shop sells items that were made by the patients and other natives. Our favorite thing was a basket made from the "filter" of a whale's mouth. We got the whole scoop on it-but we were fed so much amazing information today that I can't remember the details..so anyway......Whales that filter feed have "hair-like/brushes" that filter the food that goes into their mouth. Well---a small basket made out of this stuff is beautiful and sells for $500!!! Speaking of this "whale-filter" we also saw a man selling it on the sidewalk today--pretty popular!

We went on our first Alaskan adventure...it was pretty minor, but fun! We went to Kincaide Park in Anchorage--supposedly has the highest amount of moose in the city, but we didn't see any:( We hiked a trail to the ocean bay--Adam managed to find some walking sticks, thank goodness because I fell flat on my butt on a hill! On one of the lookouts there were the bones of a large whale. It was neato--you walk out of the woods to the sight of the ocean! It was low-tide, some people were swimming, but we decided to just take a stroll. There weren't any great shells, but some really cool rocks! (our moms will love this!) We scoped for rocks and also made a couple competitions of throwing rocks to hit a target first......we were tied!

We have been craving seafood--especially after visiting the bay! We ate at an Asian/Seafood Buffet. King crab legs, shrimp, sushi, different kinds of fish.....oh and dried/fried "minnows". We had to try one of course....gross! Also--Adam tried sushi for the 1st time ever!!

Adam has been busy getting everything lined up--car and renters insurance, bank accounts, a new cell phone plan, address changes, Alaskan residency, etc and I have been busy helping him when needed and cleaning our condo. It's a nice place, but I feel like we are back in college--I'm tired of scrubbing disgusting cupboards.....how does somebody make cupboards so dirty?!?!? BUT we gave ourselves time to play today---had a great time. Also found out that Adam has a 3-day weekend!! Wahoo!!!

And here are pictures of our Condo...

  1. Hey guys! Your place looks great!
I'm wondering if the fried dried minnows
are smelt? They were a big deal back in Minnesota.

  2. Won't be long before there is a shovel in that garage : ) Looks like a great appartment. Great to hear about the hospital facilities. And there is no way I'd eat that minnow thing!!

  3. Send me some of the dried fish things. Looks like something I would try. What!! Adam found something he didn't like? Nice kitchen area, looks like the furballs are comfy. Is the washer and dryer big enough to handle Adams clothes? Must not be any restriction on how long of pants your can launder. Miss you guys.
