Working to Live

So we still do not have a place in Anchorage to call home yet. Normally, I would be freaking out about something like this, but with the amount of things that need to get done before our move, I have better things to worry about (Getting ready for the wedding, buying a new car, moving everything from Traer and Iowa City back to Des Moines, Preparing and packing for the BIG move, studying for the Boards to get my license, and getting DK a job). Speaking of DK getting a job, it seems that the Anchorage school district is playing hard to get.

After an initial screening interview with the Anchorage School District, we received a letter in the mail stating that Danielle is not up to par for teaching in the Anchorage! My initial reaction was shock and anger. How can any school district say that Danielle is not up to their standards?!? If you know Danielle or how she acts in her classroom, you will know that she is one of those teachers that every kid wants to have as their teacher, and one of those teachers that after you graduate from her class, you never forget the impact she had on you. She was one of very few students to land a full time teaching job directly out of college. She has multiple minors as well as an early childhood development teaching certificate. Her background and experience with children extends further back than I can pinpoint. She is a ridiculously good teacher, and I think not allowing Danielle to teach is a HUGE mistake.

Come to find out, that disheartening letter may be something like a standard protocol for the Anchorage School District. After speaking with other first year teachers, it seems that this letter may be somewhat common. We think it may be an attempt to weed out the not so serious applicants, and concentrate on those seriously wanting to teach in Anchorage. The letter stated that a second interview may be granted after some sort of an appeals or rescreening process. Because we are FOR SURE moving to Anchorage, I don't know how much more serious she can get. Regardless, it will all work out somehow.
